What great instructions! I'm so excited to try this - I always plant my annuals too late (or not at all) and although I get the plants, I rarely get enough flowers! THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I've gardened for years and never heard of this before, but I'll be trying it this year!
ReplyDeleteDid you try it?

DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this valuable information... we have our garden on spring... and we try to do our seeds on winter but indoor with artificial light... when we put them out some of them died because of the sun and the real weather...
I am from Edmonton... here the weather its really cold... temperatures goes below -20 for the month of january to february and snow is here until May... do you think it can work with this temperatures?
Would this be okay to start garlic in?
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm from Calgary. In response to Apple Tree Management, this is my third yr in winter sowing. I had grown tomatoes, peppers, hollyhocks, lupines, marigold, blanket flower etc.
ReplyDeleteThis guideline is the best. Thank you.
This is so helpful! I'm in Calgary, too! Thank you for sharing which plants you used for winter sowing!
DeleteWhat month did you start your seeds, Anonymous?
DeleteFrom Calgary: hollyhock, gaillardia, coreopsis, lupine, coneflower went out Jan 14
DeleteKale, cabbage, kohl rabi went Feb 8
I used milk jugs taped around due to harsh weather. Cold warning -40 to -50 😊
Hope this helps.
I'm so glad this worked for someone in Calgary! I'm in Medicine Hat, and some years I'm left with too short of a growing season to really get a good harvest, hopefully this will help. ☺
ReplyDeleteI am interested in everything your article has to say, but it is almost impossible to read because of the background. The type does not show up on the dark blue portion of the background and I have given up trying to read it as the squinting to try has given me a headache. Any chance the background can be made user friendly?
ReplyDeleteI'm very interested in this way of starting seedlings. I'm in Phoenix, AZ, Zone 9b-10. Does this work here also? Zones beyond #7 aren't listed in your article, so just curious.
ReplyDeleteI am from Portland, Oregon where we have just finished our last frost (hopefully). I'm starting things indoors as it's raining a lot and I don't want things to wash away just yet. I was just regretting (I knew I would!) not planting my garlic in the fall for a good harvest this summer. My question with cold stratification is this: would it work to put them in the fridge/freezer to trick the plant to believing it was in the cold? If I were to do this, how long would I want to do that?
ReplyDeleteI was reading second sowing before 1st frost.. really January is 1st frost? We getnours in October.. and then in March or April? Thats our last frost month in April? I'm confused

ReplyDeleteHas anyone in zone 7 tried this, I am in NJ and would love to know the results given our weather is so temperamental
ReplyDeleteI'm on zone 7 in DC and I plan on trying this method and sowing indoors under grow lights. Will be a great experiment.
